A basic survival kit for psychology students
Surviving (and thriving) in your psychology
program depends on putting your best foot forward. Material you
may need help with includes the following:
- Find
journals, articles, and abstracts on the web! This wonderful
list was put together by Armin Gunther of Augsburg and Martien Brand of
Amsterdam.
- Understand the structure and processes of the brain. This
is a fascinating page from Harvard Medical School.
- Understand differences in sexual
preference. This is Clarion University's Allies page, with
links to Carnegie-Mellon University's pages. I also like the pages put out
by Gay, Lesbian, and Straight
Teachers Network (GLSTN). This page, in particular, is noteworthy as it
details the negative
impact society and our schools have on our gay, lesbian, and bisexual
youth.
- Do you believe that people with mental illness are
different? defective? unsuccessful? Challenge your
misconceptions here, and recognize the possibilities for living with a psychiatric diagnosis.
- The National Alliance for the
Mentally Ill advocates for the mentally ill as well as offers
support and eductional services. Their page has many excellent links and
has received an award for excellence from Mental Health Net.
- This is a bibliography of
books, both autobiographies and fiction, about the experience of
psychological distress and mental illness.
- These are the APA's ethical
guidelines for work with clients and human subjects.
- These are the guidelines for ethical research with
animals,. developed by the APA's Committee on Animal Research
and Ethics.

presenting information, especially:
