What skills do you need to make it through your psychology program?

A good education prepares you to think as a psychologist and to develop some useful ways of approaching the world, yourself and your job. These skills include an ability:

• to think carefully, clearly, and flexibly
• to recognize problems and decode them
• to recognize the effects of development, gender, and culture on behavior
• to apply psychological concepts and theories to understand the world, as well as intervene with them
• to communicate your ideas clearly both in writing and orally

While there are many different ways one can do this, this is one set of guidelines proposed by the University of Georgia system. These are my recommendations for courses or levels of proficiency outside the major if you are planning to go to graduate school.
