How do I transfer graduate credits?

I have just recently moved to Tennessee from California. I completed 24 hours or units in studying to get my Master's degrees in counseling. But I am having trouble finding a scool here that will accept me with the 24 hours or units that I have already completed. I am currently enrolled in school, but I have had to start from scratch. Is there is any way you can help me find information on getting my master's at home or finding a school in Tennessee that will accept me with my credits? H

You're in a difficult position. Many schools want to know that their students have credentials that they can vouch for, to protect both their name and keep them from liability when you are out practicing in the field. Therefore schools often only accept a few transfer courses. These are the options that immediately present themselves. None of these is very palatable.

  1. You can start over.

  2. You can go back to California to complete the remaining semester or two.

  3. You can contact every school in the vicinity as well as every school that advertises that you can complete school by mail -- Nova University is one of these -- to see which school or schools will offer you the best "deal" in terms of financial aid, credit transfer, name and other perks.

  4. While some schools only accept a certain number of credits, they may accept competencies or allow you to challenge courses by exam. It's worth asking. Good luck, JMS
