In this unit we will be looking at the role of our thinking in how we feel. In particular, we'll be paying attention to our thoughts and reactions (both emotional and behavioral) under different situations. How do your thoughts make things better (or worse)? You'll want to record your behavior on a chart like this:
| Antecedent Events | Beliefs | Emotional and Behavioral Consequences |
| Forgot my test! | How could I be so stupid
as to forget I had a test! Maybe I don't even belong in college! |
Very upset! I walked out of my test
and just stood banging my head against the wall! |
| Meri didn't say hi on the way to class. |
Ok. So first I thought she
was angry at me and I thought, What's wrong with me! Then, I remembered that she has a lot going on right now. Maybe she was thinking about something else... |
(1) Upset and distressed! (2) Calmed
down and decided to talk to her about this. When I did, she said she hadn't even seen me! |
Pay special attention to what you think and how that affects your reactions in at least four situations. If you can see a pattern, pull this together in your write-up.
