COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The purpose of this course is to familiarize you with the area of psychology that studies deviant or abnormal behavior. At the end of the course you should be familiar with (1) the major DSM IV diagnostic catagories and symptom clusters that differentiate the categories, (2) current knowledge regarding causes (etiology) of the disorders, (3) some historical views regarding certain issues and disorders, and (4) some of the current issues and controversies related to clinical work. At the end of the course you should be able to identify a clinical diagnosis from a case presentation.

GRADING: Test 1 = 100 points
Test 2 = 100 points A = 370 - 410
Test 3 = 100 points B = 330 - 369
Test 4 = 100 points C = 290 - 329
Novel = 10 points * D = 250 - 289


Tests will be approximately 75 - 80 % from lecture and are approximately 80% matching
& multiple choice with the remainder essay. Final exam will be approximately
70% comprehensive and 30% new material.


* Books -- a novel related to individuals with emotional disorders will be assigned.
A very brief quiz will be given. If you have read the book and have a general
understanding of it you should expect to get maximum score on this quiz.


ATTENDANCE: Class attendance is an important part of the learning process. Most of the
material on tests will be from class lectures. While no points are directly given or
taken away for attendance, I will take role and this will be the main factor in
determining any "curve" at the end of the semester
. If you miss a class, it is your
responsibility to get class information.
