 | Clarion University Psychology Department "in brief" |
We are a medium-sized department, with 200+ majors, 11 full-time faculty, three majors (B.S. and B.A. in Psychology and B.A. in Sociology/Psychology) and two minors (Psychology and Gerontology). Our size allows us to offer the best of both small and larger departments. We have a large range of courses and services that you might not get in a small department. On the other hand, we offer a family atmosphere and actively mentor our students, taking students under our wings when they are interested. Some things to know about our department:
We have a newly renovated building. Our computer lab is right across the hall from our state-of-the art classrooms and is accessible for in-class use.
- We have a faculty who care about their teaching, are active innovators in research and service on teaching, and are widely acknowledged as excellent teachers. Several have been nominated as "master teachers," two have served as Directors of the Honors Program and a third has served as the university's Advising Coordinator.
- Our faculty are active researchers and writers. We have published books on research methods, women's issues, developmental psychology, writing psychology papers, personality, and multicultural therapy.
- Rather than working in isolation, we involve our students in our research. In one year, for example, we took more than a dozen students to American Psychological Association, Eastern Psychological Association, Cognitive Aging, and the Annual Conference for the Advancement of College Teaching and Learning.
- We encourage our students to get applied experience in the field. Many of our students do trainings through our local domestic violence and rape crisis centers. We place students in semester-long internships at a variety of sites including the local psychiatric hospital, a partial hospitalization program and an in-home family therapy agency. Students work with juvenile probation, CUP Admissions, SAFE, PASSAGES and Children & Youth Services.
- We have monthly pot lucks for faculty and students to get together (often around holidays) to get to know each other on a more casual basis.
- We have four active student organizations: Psychology Club, Venango Campus Psychology Club, Psi Chi (the national honorary in Psychology), and Psychobiology Club. These are excellent places to learn more about the field and become more involved in our department.
We mentor our students and take their future success very seriously. We offer the following links to help students in their college career and to prepare for graduate school. Here are some tips from seniors.
- We offer three scholarships (Erik S. Knotick Memorial Scholarship, Iseli K. Krauss Scholarship and the Psychology Endowed Scholarship) and a research award annually.
- Our students have been very successful getting jobs and going to graduate school. Students have been accepted into Widener University, Brandeis University, University of Pittsburgh, Indiana University, University of Delaware and many, many more!
- We have the best secretary in the world! Diana will be very helpful to you during your stay here and has been honored with a university-wide mentoring award for her work!
