Psychology of Personal Growth (PSY 225)
Fall 2004

Course Description: Emphasizes personal growth, enabling each student to explore self-identity, social relationships, and environmental influences. Explores problems of personality, resolution of conflicts and stress, and the role of emotions in behavior, relationships, and health. No prerequisite.
In this class we will use research and theory in psychology to better understand our own lives. I hope this course will: (1) enhance your personal growth, (2) increase your understanding of others, and (3) give you tools that will help you act more powerfully in your life.

Requirements:
1. Reading: Corey, G. & Corey, M. (2002). I Never Knew I Had a Choice, 7th ed. Belmont, CA: Wadsworth.

2. Quizzes: There will be seven bi-weekly quizzes on the readings and lecture material. Quizzes will be given during the second half of class and cover two weeks of material. There will be multiple choice, matching, and fill-in type questions. Only the six highest quizzes will count toward your final grade. Each quiz is worth 15 points, for a total of up to 90 points toward your final grade. I will schedule a make-up only if you have notified me before class that you will be missing a quiz!

3. Journal: Your journal is a record of your thoughts and feelings on the topics we cover in class. For each topic, ou will write one entry, about 2 pages long, in response to questions handed out before the topic is discussed in class. Your journal will be handed in three times during the semester, and must be kept up to date. You are allowed to miss one week's entry. Late entries will not be accepted. Each journal entry is worth 5 points, for a total of up to 70 points toward your final grade.

4. Paper: You may select one of the following: a) write a 4 page typed paper on your philosophy of life (see handout on "Writing a Philosophy of Life"); or b) read a self-help book and write a 3 page typed critique of it (see handout on "Writing a Critique of a Self-Help Book"). Your paper is worth up to 50 points toward your final grade and is due on November 23.

5. Class Participation: Group discussion will be a significant part of the learning in this class. It is therefore very important that you attend regularly. You are allowed to miss one class, and then after that, you will lose five points from your final grade total for every class you miss, for any reason. As part of the class participation requirement, you are expected to lead your discussion group twice during the semester. When you lead, you will meet with me before class to discuss that day's exercises, and then write about how your group went in your jounral as part of that week's entry.

6. Extra Credit: You can earn 10 points of extra credit by doing the "beautiful day" exercise and writing about your experiences as an extra journal entry. This exercise will be described and handed out on October 5 during our discussion of positive psychology and can be submitted for either the second or third journal dates.
