Watch television, commercials, read advertisements, listen to music, and watch movies. What are the messages sent about whatever cultural group you're observing -- African Americans, Euro-Americans, Latinos/Latinas, Gays, or Lesbians, or even subgroups, like Afican American and Euro-American women. What values are endorsed? What worldview do you observe? These values may include power, intimacy, beliefs in who controls their destinies, the importance of children or sexuality, as well as many other issues.
How do you know? How are these values communicated verbally? Nonverbally? Be as concrete as you can as you describe how you recognize these values.
Be aware of the audience as well, when possible, of the race of director or producer. There are, obviously, differences in depictions of Black men by Black directors and producers as opposed to White directors and producers. Also, be aware of the audience. Watching MTV may tell you about Black artists' perceptions of what will sell to a young Black (or White) audience, but it doesn't necessarily tell you about middle-aged Blacks.
